Our History

Being the first nuclear reactor to be built in Missouri, MSTR has a long and rich history, with plenty of upgrades and modifications along the way. This timeline shows some of the many major upgrades our reactor underwent, with many more being planned for the future!

 

 

1959

Construction begins on the "Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy Reactor (MSMR)," based upon the Curtiss-Wright Research Reactor in Quehanna, PA.

 

 

 

 

 

 

1961

The first startup to power was conducted on December 9th

 

 

 

1967

Reactor licensed power increased from 10kW to current 200kW

 

 

 

 

 

 

1980

Front office/reception building extension added

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1993

Reactor instrumentation in the control room overhauled

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2014

Digital Control systems and new console installed

 

 

 

 

 

2022

New digital recorders installed and wide-range linear channel upgraded
